I want to add a comment. I want to memorialize fellow Fireman Pete McLaughlin the "Sniper" from Rescue Co. 4 in Queens Blvd in Queens, NY. Yesterday was his 14th anniversary since he passed.

Firefighting is not a job, is a lifestyle. When becoming a fireman you are committing to a life-long effort of continued learning, physical fitness and unparallel brotherhood.

It is your moral duty to learn every possible aspect of the job for your life, your brother firemen and the public we serve depend on it.

Maintain the highest possible level of physical fitness for the very nature of the job will test you physically and mentally to inconceivable levels.

Don’t practice the brotherhood, live it!

Look around, there is ALWAYS something to do in the firehouse.

102. Make your bed as early as possible, not because you plan to take a nap but it makes the firehouse look neat and its tradition.

103. Make sure your rig is clean and shiny because that's the first impression the public is going to have of the Fire Dept.

104. Come to work nicely pressed and shoes polished so the public can have a good impression of the Fire Dept.

This is a good question and I think the answer is that we (firefighters) are often not using the tool in the traditional sense. Most of the time we are swinging the axe or the sledge, we need control and precision over the powerful swing you would use with a standard swing ie. forcible entry when your partner is holding the halligan and you are more than likely not sliding that top hand at all. And with those precision type hits, you want to be locked in and taking short powerful strokes. Additionally, I find that you can still slide your top hand when you're doing rough work (busting cbs block or punching a hole in a roof) even though I agree--for that type of work a smooth handle would be nicer. I hope this answers your question.
